Post-Bariatric Surgery Plastic Surgeries:
There are countless surgeries one may endure after excess weight loss. The operations needed for each patient depends on where their weight loss occurred, where their influence originated, and their success in toning areas of the body.
A brachioplasty involves reshaping the under portion of the upper arm, either from the underarm or all the way down to the elbow. It is used to treat loose, sagging skin. Weight changes, aging, and heredity can result in drooping, sagging appearance. While exercise can strengthen the muscle tone, it can not address any excess skin there that has lost its elasticity or weakened tissues there. An arm lift can reduce excess fat and skin in the area and result in a more toned and balanced look.
This procedure can be performed on its own or in conjunction with tummy tuck surgery. It involves removing the overhanging apron of skin that can occur below the belly button. This extra skin results from extreme weight loss and is normal in patients who have bariatric surgery. The pannus (apron of skin) can cause many problems for individuals including hygiene problems, inability to feel comfortable, the increase in yeast infections and lower back pain. This procedure can not tighten the area, just remove the extra fat and skin there. This surgery should only occur if one has maintained their weight for at least a year and is dedicated to eating right and remaining active.
A mastopexy or breast lift firms the breast by removing any extra skin and tightens the tissue to support their shape or to reshape them altogether. Women’s breasts can change for various reasons whether it is weight gain or loss, pregnancy, aging or heredity. A breast lift is used to rejuvenate the bosom and create a profile that is uplifted and youthful again. Please note that breast lift surgery cannot change the size of the breasts itself; just reshape them to look raised.
A thigh lift procedure improves the look of the legs and frequently is administered with liposuctions or other lift procedures. A surgeon reshapes the thighs by removing any excess skin or fat that makes the skin look smoother and also better proportioned. If one is looking to remove excess fat, liposuction is a better choice. After weight loss surgery, those who lost substantial weight can often find it difficult to the excess skin on the thighs. If the skin’s elasticity is especially poor, a combination of both liposuctions and thigh lift procedures is recommended. This is an excellent surgical option for those whose body carries a lot of weight on thighs and legs.
Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
Abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck, is a procedure that removes any excess skin or fat and can sometimes even restore any separated or weakened muscles leaving a smooth, firm look. It’s important to know that tummy tucks are not weight loss substitutes and cannot correct stretch marks unless they are a part of the skin being removed (generally that below the belly button itself). Tummy tuck can significantly help those who lost substantial weight, by making their stomachs look more appealing.
Body contouring is often the final stage of a remarkable weight loss journey. The procedure improves the tone and shape of underlying tissue that supports the skin and the fat. After weight loss occurs, the skin’s elasticity is significantly reduced. As a result, individuals see sagging upper arms, flat breasts, apron-like abdominal area and sagging thighs, groin or even buttocks. This procedure improves the shape and tone of various parts of the body and restores it to a healthy appearance that has smooth skin. It is not recommended someone chooses this surgical procedure if they are not done losing weight. This should be the final result of the process where the pressure is maintained only during and after recovery.
Questions to Ask Before Surgery
It’s important to gain necessary information regarding surgeries before making a decision on whether you want to have it or not. Some things to question include: What each procedure includes. Does the process require hospitalization? What anesthesia is used? How much time is needed for recovery? What kind of outcome can a patient expect? What are the risks? Lastly, are there any special considerations to make concerning the procedure for the long term?
